We’ve been driving Nissan Leafs for over 6 years and done over 250,000km in them, we looked for an upgrade for our own vehicles and found something we think will be great for those looking for more range and less battery degradation than the equivalent Leaf.
BYD Auto Co Ltd (Build Your Dreams) is the fourth largest producer of battery electric vehicles in the world and are expected to sell over 1.5 million electric vehicles in 2022 alone.
BYD manufacture their own batteries using lithium iron phosphate chemistry, this chemistry is much safer than traditional EV battery technologies, has significantly less toxic chemicals including no cobalt or nickel. They also offer a much longer battery lifespan than other EV battery technologies with an expected lifespan in excess of 4000 cycles, compared to 800 – 900 for the Nissan Leaf.

The BYD E6 is a 5 door electric hatch back with a huge 82kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, giving it among the largest, longest lasting batteries available in an EV in New Zealand. If driven conservatively a range of over 300km between charges is achievable. These vehicles are ex commercial taxis offering a very solid build quality and proven reliability in commercial taxi fleets throughout Asia, Europe and the UK.
These vehicles batteries originally had a manufacturers warranty of 500,000km or 10 years to 75% capacity.
